SR Solar Reflective Coating

roVa Shield SR Solar Reflective Coating contains both reflecting agents for solar reflectance and aerogel compounds for thermal insulation. It reflects hot solar rays and also insulates roof surfaces from the outside temperature. Although only one coat of roVa Shield SR is needed to achieve solar reflectance, additional coats improve thermal insulation performance.

The following work was completed on a sunny summer afternoon and took 3 hours to complete. Painted area measures 4m x 4m (13 ft x 13 ft) for a total area of 16m² (172 ft²). Primer was applied followed by 3 coats of roVa Shield SR Solar Reflectance Coating. A total of 3.4 gallons were used. Under hot and dry weather conditions, dry time may be shorter than the recommended number in TDS.

Apply Primer

Pick a sunny day with relatively low humidity so coating layers may dry quickly.

Before applying the primer, sweep and clean the roof floor to clear of any debris.

Primer is applied as a preparation step so that roVa Shield SR may better adhere to the rough concrete roof surface.

Apply 1st Coat

When applying the 1st coat, make sure to mix the pale with a mixing rod so that the contents are well dispersed.

Be sure to mix thoroughly so that the coating is evenly mixed and the viscosity has gone down to a creamier consistency. You can store the mixing rod in a ziploc bag for use later in the day.

Apply 2nd Coat

Apply additional coats as necessary to achieve thermal insulation. The thicker the coating layer, better the insulation performance. Typically 3~4 coats will achieve a coating thickness of around 0.8~1mm (0.03~0.04") when the coating fully dries. (*thickness may vary with painting style)

Apply 3rd Coat

3rd coat was applied mainly to cover the "nooks and crannies" of the rough concrete surface, as well as to increase the coating thickness for thermal insulation during Winter.


Let the surface dry for a full 24 hours. Finished roof top is now water resistant, solar reflective, and insulating.


One week later on a hot Summer day with outside temperature reaching 37°C (99°F), roof top surface temperatures were measured and compared between the roVa Shield SR coated surface and the uncoated raw concrete surface. The result was a difference of 30°C (54°F)!

Two different infra-red temperature readers were used to measure the surface temperatures. Both readers gave similar results. roVa Shield SR coated surface and uncoated raw concrete surfaces temperatures were 63°C (145°F) and 33°C (91°F) respectively (in the photo) and 65°C (149°F) and 35°C (95°F) respectively (in the video).

A different infra-red temperature reader by Bosch was used to measure the surface temperatures. roVa Shield SR coated surface and uncoated raw concrete surfaces temperatures were 59°C (138°F) and 28°C (82°F) respectively (in the video).
